Yesterday, March 14th, was Children’s Craft Day! Doing crafts with your kids, especially when they are little, helps them develop their fine motor skills and encourages creativity. Our team at Watch Me Shine provides you and your family with more than just day care. We also give your child a safe and supportive environment to learn, grow, and reach their full potential. But as much as we do while your child is with us at Watch Me Shine, what you do with your child at home is even more important.
Arts and crafts aren’t just for day care! Here are three fun and easy crafts you can do with your kids at home.
Popsicle Stick Puppets
Puppets are a great craft to do with your kids because they encourage creativity and imagination while you’re making them and when you’re finished. You can make animals, people, monsters, magical creatures, or anything your child can imagine. Decorate them with markers, paint, googly eyes, glitter, or whatever you have handy. Once you’ve made your puppets, let your child’s imagination run wild by using them to make up stories, act out scenes, or whatever else their fertile imagination can dream up.
Sponge Painting
Sponge painting is a great way to teach younger children about shapes and colors. Buy a package of cheap sponges and cut them into different shapes and sizes. Cover your kitchen table or the floor with a big piece of paper and have your kids use paint to stamp different shapes in various colors. To help them learn, ask them to identify the different shapes and colors.
Collages
Making a collage is a fun way to help your child develop their fine motor skills. Use stickers, colored paper, and printed images from magazines or the internet to create art featuring their characters. If your child is old enough, let them cut the pictures out while you watch. If you have younger kids, cut out the images for them, but have them paste them to the paper themselves. Once they’re done, they can display their creation in their bedroom or play area.
