Halloween is supposed to be fun, but sometimes, we let the preparations get in the way of the fun. If you’re making your kids’ costumes yourself, it’s easy to get stressed out. Kids can come up with very specific ideas for their Halloween costumes, or ideas you thought would be simple turn out to be more complicated than expected. But no matter what your kids want to be for Halloween, you want them to have costumes they love, and they can proudly show off to their friends at day care and while they’re out trick-or-treating.
Don’t let stressing about making costumes ruin Halloween for you and your kids! Take these tips to simplify your creative endeavors.
Make a Group Costume
If you go trick-or-treating as a family or with a close group of friends, group costumes are an easy way to get several costumes from one idea. There are plenty of children’s books with characters who have simple but recognizable outfits that make for easy costumes. As an example, yellow pants and a red shirt make you Winnie-the-Pooh. If the adults in the adults taking part in the group costume are less enthusiastic about dressing up, you can spend less time on their costumes and put your effort into ensuring the kids’ costumes get the attention they deserve.
Reuse Last Year’s Costumes
It’s always easier to work with what you have over starting completely from scratch. If one of your kids wants to wear a costume from last year, don’t argue! However, it’s more likely that they will want to be something else. Still, you might be able to modify a costume you already have. Princess dresses become fairies with wings and magic wands. It’s easy to add a few details to a generic superhero costume from a discount Halloween store to make it look more like the real thing.
