Get Ready to Go to Day Care or Preschool for the First Time

Going to preschool or day care for the first time is a big change for kids, so it’s understandable if they (and their parents!) are a little anxious. However, you can calm that anxiety by doing a few simple things to prepare for the adjustment. If your kids are often with another caregiver, such as a family member or babysitter, being separated from their parents won’t be new, but being around a group of other children may be.

No matter what big changes first-time day care or preschool will bring, you can make the transition smoother with a little preparation.

Use Positive Language

Kids take their cues from the adults around them about everything, even when we think they’re not listening. Whenever you or other adults talk about preschool or day care, use positive language to highlight that the new experience is something to look forward to. For example, ask, “Are you excited?” rather than “Are you nervous?” to promote positive associations. If your child expresses nervousness or anxiety, acknowledge their feelings, but then steer the conversation towards what they will like about going to preschool or day care.

Spend Time with Other Kids

For some children, attending preschool or day care will be the first time they are in a group of other kids. Some kids will take to it naturally, but others will need help developing social skills. To prepare shy children for this experience, arrange play dates or join group activities.

Adjust to Your New Routine

Kids love routine, so you probably already have one established at home. However, the preschool or day care schedule will probably require some changes. To help kids adjust, make changes to your daily routine now so their internal clocks aren’t thrown off by the new schedule. Get in touch with the child care center to find out what time snacks, naps, or other activities happen so you can adjust your child’s current routine accordingly.
