Stay Safe Outdoors This Summer

Stay Safe Outdoors This Summer

The end of the school year is here, and it’s time to send your kids outside to run around and enjoy the sunshine. But while you’re preparing your list of activities and lining up your summer child care options in Bangor, Maine, you can’t forget about summer safety. Even if your kids are staying in your backyard, you want to be sure they are staying safe so they can be free to play outdoors.

Summer safety is always a priority for parents and child care providers in Bangor, Maine. Take these simple tips to keep kids safe outside.

Check Your Helmets

Nothing says summer like riding your bike, scooter, or skateboard around the neighborhood. Whenever your kids are riding something with wheels, they should be wearing helmets. However, to protect your kids from head and brain injuries, you need to ensure their helmets fit correctly. The helmet should be the right size and sit level in the child’s head with snug straps. Helmets are the most important, but knee and elbow pads provide extra protection, especially for kids who are still learning to ride.

Use Sun Protection

Preventing sunburns is a major concern in the summer. The sun is strong, and you don’t have to be outside for very long before it can damage your skin. Kids should always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF when they’re outdoors, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. If you plan to spend a full day outside, sun-protective clothing of UPF 50 or higher provides additional protection from UV rays. Brimmed hats and sunglasses are the best way to protect faces and eyes from the sun.

Drink Plenty of Water

While we ensure our kids stay hydrated throughout the year, it’s especially important in the summer. Children’s bodies don’t cool themselves as quickly as adults’, so you should always have water nearby when kids are playing outside. We know kids get caught up in their play, so remind them to drink, especially when they are engaged in strenuous activities, such as playing sports.
