Baking with your kids over the holidays is a lot of fun. However, you want to use simple recipes when you’re in the kitchen with your little ones. That’s where your favorite Bangor child care team comes in. We have a basic sugar cookie recipe that’s easy to make and sure to be a hit with everyone.

Soft Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
- 3 ¾ cups flour
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup butter or margarine
- 2 eggs; for kids with allergies, use an equivalent amount of an egg substitute
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Preparation and Baking
Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt, then set them aside. In a second bowl, combine the sugar and butter or margarine and mix until smooth. Beat in your eggs one at a time, and then add the vanilla. Finally, mix in the dry ingredients to make a smooth dough. Wrap the dough and refrigerate it for 1 to 3 hours. You can also chill it overnight and bake the cookies later.
Once the dough is chilled and you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400º F. Grease two cookie sheets and lightly flour your work surface. Roll the dough to about ¼ inch thick and use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes, holiday-themed or otherwise. Arrange your cookies on the baking sheets and bake for 6 to 8 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Now for the fun part: decorating! Make your favorite icing or frosting in different colors, grab some sprinkles, and go to town! Decorate alongside your kids or help them with their creations. When you’re done, share them with your friends, or enjoy them yourselves. It’s easy to pull off a section of dough and make a small batch because you have to chill the dough before baking.
